I probably shouldn’t say it, but I heard about this place for the first time through the Designboom site. Since I am very interested in architecture and design, I have been following this site for a long time. At a certain moment, a new bar passed in Antwerp. Special about this spot was that it was located in the cathedral! After further research, I discovered that it could not always be visited on that moment.
De Plek started as a meeting place for churchgoers and parishioners, to chat and have a drink after mass. The bistro has been open 6 days a week since May 2019, it is closed only on Tuesdays.
It serves some small dishes, such as croques, the standard drinks and also 2 exclusive house beers: the Aurora and the Memento. Taste them here (if you like them, you can buy them in the cathedral shop afterwards). If the weather is good, enjoy the enclosed terrace with a beautiful view of the Gothic decorations of the roof of the cathedral.
‘De Plek’ can be found at the back of the cathedral, through the door on the right of the altar. You enter an old chapel based on a blue color and light wood. The color is derived from the stained glass windows in the church. The wood that they used here, spruce, was the original floor covering of the chapel. Also pay attention to the details: the cutouts in the walls of the bar and the shape of the tables: a contemporary interpretation of some gothic shapes. Discover the pointed arch, the four-leaf clover and a pentagon.
